Heuristic bidding strategies for multiple heterogeneous auctions

    No full text
This paper investigates utility maximising bidding heuristics for agents that participate in multiple heterogeneous auctions, in which the auction format and the starting and closing times can be different. Our strategy allows an agent to procure one or more items and to participate in any number of auctions. For this case, forming an optimal bidding strategy by global utility maximisation is computationally intractable, and so we develop two-stage heuristics that first provide reasonable bidding thresholds with simple strategies before deciding which auctions to participate in. The proposed approach leads to an average gain of at least 24% in agent utility over commonly used benchmarks

    Congestion Games with Complementarities

We study a model of selfish resource allocation that seeks to incorporate dependencies among resources as they exist in modern networked environments. Our model is inspired by utility functions with constant elasticity of substitution (CES) which is a well-studied model in economics. We consider congestion games with different aggregation functions. In particular, we study LpL_p norms and analyze the existence and complexity of (approximate) pure Nash equilibria. Additionally, we give an almost tight characterization based on monotonicity properties to describe the set of aggregation functions that guarantee the existence of pure Nash equilibria.Comment: The final publication is available at Springer via http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-319-57586-5_1

A construction of constant scalar curvature manifolds with delaunay-type ends

    Get PDF
It has been showed by Byde that it is possible to attach a Delaunay-type end to a compact nondegenerate manifold of positive constant scalar curvature, provided it is locally conformally flat in a neighborhood of the attaching point. The resulting manifold is noncompact with the same constant scalar curvature. The main goal of this paper is to generalize this result. We will construct a one-parameter family of solutions to the positive singular Yamabe problem for any compact non-degenerate manifold with Weyl tensor vanishing to sufficiently high order at the singular point. If the dimension is at most 5, no condition on the Weyl tensor is needed. We will use perturbation techniques and gluing methods

    Decision procedures for multiple auctions

This paper presents a decision theoretic framework that an autonomous agent can use to bid effectively across multiple, simultaneous auctions. Specifically our framework enables an agent to make rational decisions about purchasing multiple goods from a series of auctions that operate different protocols (we deal with the English, Dutch, First-Price Sealed Bid and Vickrey cases). The framework is then used to characterise the optimal decision that an agent should take. Finally, we develop a practical algorithm that provides a heuristic approximation to this ideal
